Forensic Death Investigation Symposium

Medicolegal Death Investigation encompasses the investigative processes, protocols and techniques involved in ascertaining the cause and manner of a person’s death. Investigations of this type are multifaceted and require the expertise of a multidisciplinary team of skilled practitioners.  A death investigation team may include experts such as death investigators, police officers, crime scene investigators, coroners, medical examiners, pathologists, paramedics, forensic anthropologists, and forensic odontologists, among others.  Each member of the team is critical and each role provides necessary information that may ultimately contribute to the resolution of the investigation.

The National Institute of Justice, in partnership with the National Center for Forensic Science at the University of Central Florida, is sponsoring a Forensic Death Investigation Symposium June 7-9, 2010, in Scottsdale, Ariz. As part of NIJ’s continuing support and work with the medicolegal death community, the symposium’s goal is to bring together a multidisciplinary group of criminal justice practitioners (medical examiners, coroners, death investigators, and other allied professionals) from across the nation who can augment the development and implementation of new and better research, training, and best practices and protocols within the death investigation community.  Major professional organizations (American Board of Medicolegal Death Investigators, International Association of Coroners and Medical Examiners, and National Association of Medical Examiners) have agreed to participate in this event and have been assisting NIJ with the development of an agenda that outlines the needs of the death investigation community.

Through the participation and collaboration of attendees, we hope to identify the issues and challenges that face medical examiners, coroners, and investigators and discover potential solutions that outline the best practices and protocols for the death investigation community.

Video files of the proceedings and PowerPoint presentations will be available through NCFS’s website after the event.
